Highlights of The Chicago Market: Living and Giving®

Interactive Window displays

Attendees overflowed the main entrance lobby as Chicago-based designer Mick Santiago created three different store window display vignettes. The displays were created live in The Merchandise Mart's North Lobby and featured three themes - Paris Flea Market; Everything's for Sale; Finding the Right Price Point.

Buyers talked to Santiago and asked questions as he created a themed, life-size window storefront with up to 100 resources from The Chicago Market in under an hour. Each day, Santiago provided buyers with information to replicate the same displays in their front store windows.

Speed Networking

New vendors to The Chicago Market were offered a great opportunity to pitch their products to over 80 buyers during the Speed Networking event. Vendors were given three minutes per table to do their best sales pitch as buyers enjoyed lunch. Exhibitors walked away with new contacts and more sales while buyers got the latest scoop in product news direct from the source.

Fiddler's Elbow designs universally appeal to the art, pet and nature lover - visit us at The Chicago Market: Living and Giving - Beckman's Handcrafted Show, July 22-28, 2010

More than three decades ago, John Gunther started the silk-screening company with a handful of workers in an old barn that once housed 10,000 chickens. Now we are celebrating our 37th year in business.

He conceived the idea in 1973 after a visit to the Museum of the City of New York, where he viewed an exhibition of 19th century cloth toys intricately printed using an antiquated process of hand engraved copper rollers. John's mission was to revive this art form using modern silk-screening techniques. This proved to be challenging, as there was no one experienced in full color textile printing, no school to consult. Fiddler's Elbow developed the process the hard way, through constant experimentation and soon became the best reproduction silk-screen printer in the country.

We continue to manufacture at our facilities in Middle Falls, New York and offer products that are functional, decorative, reasonably priced and delivered in a timely fashion. Our designs universally appeal to the art, pet and nature lover. We hope that you enjoy our products as much as we enjoy designing and making them for you and welcome the opportunity to become one of your preferred suppliers.

Bridge for Africa's signature product is the South African Zulu Telephone Wire Basket - Find our complete collection at The Chicago Market: Living and Giving - Beckman's Handcrafted Show, July 22-28, 2010

In 2010, buyers can once again look forward to seeing Bridge for Africa at the summer installments of the California Gift Show, Chicago Market, and New York International Gift Fair to bring exciting products to their customers.

Bridge for Africa's signature product is the South African Zulu Telephone Wire Basket.  These versatile baskets - whose patterns vary according to the inspiration of the artists who created them -can be displayed as art or put to practical use.  Additionally, buyers can now bring their customers a range of other products created from telephone wire, including jewelry and Christmas ornaments, also offered by Bridge for Africa.

But while the unique and innovative products in the Bridge catalog begin with telephone wire, they certainly do not end there.  Baskets woven from scrap fabric in Swaziland provide a textured take on a traditional basket and offer eco-friendly home décor.  Copper wire jewelry shows the talent and creativity of weavers and crochet artists in South Africa.  Christmas ornaments combining wire, grass, and glass beads delight customers by adding an African flavor to the holidays.  And at this summer's shows, Bridge will be debuting new Christmas stockings and ornaments crafted from tree bark cloth harvested sustainably in Uganda.

The Barclay Company offering nostalgic cast metal figures - see our complete collection at The Chicago Market: Living and Giving - Beckman's Handcrafted Show, July 22-28, 2010

Founded in the early 1920's, the Barclay Company rose to become this country's pre-eminent maker of metal toys. At their zenith Barclay was one of the largest toy manufacturers in the world! Over 350 people worked together to produce over 75,000 pieces each day! Unfortunately, WW II intervened, and all production for the civilian market was shut down. With the end of hostilities, Barclay jumped back into their established market sector and introduced the winter series in time for the 1946 holiday season. As residual wartime shortages eased, production surged, and this line would ultimately become their most famous product. However, Barclay, as well as other manufacturers of this type, could never quite seem to regain their pre-war eminence. Barclay was still quite busy and profitable during this time, but volume would never equal the immediate pre-war years.

Then, in the mid 1960's the bottom seemed to fall out of the "traditional" toy market. Now there were Federal laws to make toys safer, not to mention Vietnam, which put "war toys" out of favor. (A large portion of Barclay's income was still derived from toy soldiers). The atomic age and space race had finally caught up with the old-line manufacturers and made them obsolete. It was during this period that the most famous names in the toy world would either fold or face massive change. AC Gilbert (maker of American Flyer toy trains and Erector Sets) and the legendary Lionel Corporation would go bankrupt. Others, such as Marx (famous for wind- up toys and play sets) would evolve. Unfortunately, for Marx and hundreds of other companies, "evolution" meant cost cutting and sending production over-seas, more often than not with alarming results.

Barclay's founder retired at this time, and his successor would never fill his shoes. Slowly, but surely, the company withered until the doors slammed shut in1971 - bankruptcy was declared. The building would sit idle while vandals and vagrants took their toll, molds were stolen to get drug money, plaster patterns and office files were destroyed. Eventually the property would be condemned, whatever molds were left would be scrapped and the factory would be demolished. Time and attrition would slowly take their toll on what few firms remained.

The Barclay name was too memorable to fade away, and in the 1990's we acquired sole rights to the Barclay name and trademark. Now the long legacy continues to thrive under our guidance! Here at Barclay, time has stood still. We still craft our figures just as they were 100 years ago! Our figures are cast in solid metal and after the castings are trimmed and cleaned, each figure is carefully hand painted with long lasting gloss enamel. While some may criticize our production methods as "out dated" or "antiquated", customers are quick to point to the subtle quality touches that can only be achieved with hand craftsmanship. At Barclay, we take enormous pride in the fact that, in a world full of "new and improved" technology, we still operate in an atmosphere where "the old ways are still the best ways".

World Shoppe features a new line of copper and brass jewelry with semi-precious gemstones from South Africa at the Beckman's Handcrafted Gift Show ® Chicago, July 22-28, 2010

World Shoppe features a new line of copper and brass jewelry with semi-precious gemstones from South Africa at the Beckman's Handcrafted Gift Show ® Chicago, July 22-28, 2010. The line, handmade by 18 artisans from the Western Cape province of South Africa, includes necklaces, cuffs, bracelets and earrings.

"The designs are nothing like what I've seen in the United States," says Karydes. "They have the look and feel of jewelry that can be found at nicer gift and clothing boutiques but at very accessible price points designed to move in a retail marketplace. The range is wide and the semi-precious gemstones give the designs that extra edge that consumers are looking for in accessories today."

All of the items from World Shoppe are fairly traded and produced by hand in a small studio in a rural area of the Western Cape province. Megy Karydes, founder of World Shoppe, met the designer of the jewelry line on her trip to South Africa in August and is currently working with her on new designs. The inaugural collection includes 24 necklaces, over 30 cuffs and 26 pairs of earrings.

Ohio Wholesale Inc.
began as a distributor of wholesale giftware for retailers across the nation. A combination of great products, tradeshows and hard work quickly helped the company become one of the largest and most reputable in the industry. A major strategic turning point in Ohio Wholesale's development came about during the mid 1990's when the company became one of the first to develop a design department and start the process of direct importing into the United States. Creative jewelry and home décor by Zarah Co. Featured at The Chicago Market: Living and Giving - Beckman's Handcrafted Show, July 22-28, 2010

The unique appeal of Zarah sterling silver enamel art jewelry results from two rare kinds of talent: To create fresh, new designs, we seek out contemporary artists renowned for achievements in any of various art forms. To obtain technical excellence, master artisans who are expert in the old-world craft of enameling, translate the designs into distinctive pieces of jewelry. They paint each article by hand using solutions containing colored granules of glass. Next, they fire the pieces in a kiln to produce an alluring richness of color. Some designs are then plated in 24-karat gold.

The unprecedented quality of Zarah's ArtGlass sterling silver jewelry is made possible by applying leading-edge digital image processing and fine, silversmithing to the exquisite images of renowned artists. Showcased in beveled glass, the artwork is depicted in incredible detail with brilliant and accurate color rendition. All of our ArtGlass jewelry is reversible, which means you can show either of two different images, one on each side. To reverse an earring design, simply slip the earring off its ear wire, flip it around, and slide it back on.

What delights you more, the awesome grandeur of nature or the enchanting creations of talented artists? Our shell jewelry is a confluence of both. Charming images by renowned artists are engraved onto natural shell, forming a masterpiece with subtleties in color and texture that only nature can provide. Nuances in appearance respond in mystifying ways to shifts in viewing angle and illumination. The frame is crafted in sterling silver by master artisans. As with all things natural, no two are ever identical.

WAXING NOSTALGIC expands handcrafted Beeswax Ornaments into the 2010 corporate gift and special events market. The Chicago Market: Living and Giving - Beckman's Handcrafted Show, July 22-28, 2010

This week, San Francisco based WAXING NOSTALGIC© - manufacturer of exquisite and unique artisinal beeswax ornaments - announced plans to expand into the corporate gift and special events market.

During the past few years, the company has focused on introducing their line to the West Coast, where the rich history and lore about beeswax ornaments is less known than in the Northeast. "Sales have been brisk through boutiques, private sales, and shows," explains the company's founder, Linda Taylor. "Now, however, it's time to take the next step." Interestingly, the art of molding beeswax into holiday figures began in Germany and has been practiced there for at least 300 years. Using hand-carved cookie molds, village bakers made the first beeswax ornaments, some of which can still be seen in European museums. Thanks to early German immigrants to the US, the tradition has grown far beyond its holiday origins.

Today, especially in Pennsylvania-Dutch country, it's quite common to see beeswax ornaments year 'round - hanging in windows or from simple Shaker pegs - wherever their beauty and fragrance can be savored. On the West Coast, however, they're viewed as something brand new, unusual, and wonderfully unique.

The Bert Anderson Collection produces whimsical animal and holiday ornaments along with old fashioned Christmas figurines. See our complete collection at The Chicago Market: Living and Giving - Beckman's Handcrafted Show, July 22-28, 2010

Bert Anderson has been sculpting ideas in clay since his school days. He's worked with a variety of subject matter from old west figurines to whimsical gnomes. Although the overall look has been different with each project, the one thing that always seemed to show up in his work is humor.

There have been obvious puns and gags as well as something simple like a subtle look that makes you smile - or laugh. Bert graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, not really knowing what he wanted to do. He had been sculpting pieces all this time for family and friends, but never considered that making figurines was a possible career move. After he had created a line of Christmas items, he heard about the process of resin casting. Once he found a method to reproduce his work, everything changed. He was able to produce a line of items of exceptional quality that could be enjoyed by everyone.

"There are two aspects of this venture that make all the work worthwhile," explains Bert. "The first is the thrill of seeing a personality emerge from a lump of clay. The second is that people enjoy my work enough that they take one of my pieces into their homes and make it a part of their lives. As an artist, that is the greatest compliment any could give me."

Prairie Rugs - hand-made cotton area rugs are made from recycled rags - see our full line at The Chicago Market: Living and Giving - Beckman's Handcrafted Show, July 22-28, 2010

For Prairie Rugs, a Minnesota based company; eco-sustainable manufacturing practices are nothing new. These heavy weight, hand-made cotton area rugs are made from recycled rags (pre-consumer) that are acquired from textile mills in India. The cotton was originally intended to make bedding. The rags are sorted and the best grades are washed with a bio-degradable soap (no bleach). The rags are then dyed using high quality low-impact organic dyes. The cotton strips are then rinsed 3 times in separate tubs of fresh water.

This triple washing removes the residual dye and helps prevent color transfer. The source water is provided by a well located at the manufacturing site. After drying in the sun, the colored rags are woven by hand on manual looms. The rugs use a cotton warp thread that is extremely strong and of the same grade that is used to make hand-knotted Oriental rugs. These high quality rugs are cold-water washable.

The residual dye water is used to irrigate vegetables and mango trees that surround the manufacturing plant.

No child labor is used. The workers are provided a safe and pleasant working environment. They are paid more than the prevailing wage with healthcare for their families.

The lingering effects of the ‘Great Recession' have retailers looking for products that buck the trend. Prairie Rugs sales have increased in the past 2 years in a very difficult economic climate. They say that "flat is the new up". Prairie Rugs are trending well above ‘flat'.

Biedermann and Sons was founded in 1956 in Chicago primarily as an importer and distributor of fine European handmade candles and Christmas decorations. Our first location was on North Clark Street, and our second was at Clark and Addison, across the street from Wrigley Field.

In the 1960's we firmly established ourselves in the candle and giftware business through a growing network of independent sales showrooms and representatives nationwide. We were among the founding members of the Chicago Gift Show, which at the time was the single, national show. Carl Biedermann later served for many years on the Board of the Chicago Gift Show.

By 1970, we needed more warehouse space again, and moved to Northfield, IL. In 1985, we expanded again in Northfield by moving into a warehouse facility twice the size. In 1995, we moved yet again, doubling our space, and in 2002 we completed a warehouse addition that again gives us more flexibility and potential for growth and service.
